How many quarts it actually takes

Drain-and-refill with a new filter. US quarts. Dipstick MIN–MAX is not the fill.
Drain-and-refill with a new filter. US quarts. Dipstick MIN–MAX is not the fill.

The number on the dipstick is not the fill. MIN to MAX on a stick is a band — often about a quart — and it is how you check a running, warmed, parked-level engine after the oil has drained back. It is not how the factory tells you to refill the pan.

Factory fill is drain-and-refill with a new filter, in US quarts. Not liters. A US quart is 0.946 liter. A liter is 1.057 US quarts. Treat them as the same and you will overfill a metric book or starve an SAE one.

Fills people call “wrong” that are not wrong

Dry-sump cars have a tank. You do not fill them like a wet-sump Camaro SS. The procedure is in the owner’s manual: filter, tank, run, recheck. Dump 10 quarts in a wet-sump 6.2 and you will aerate oil and wet the rings.

Type is viscosity plus spec

5W-30 dexos1. 0W-40 229.5. 5W-50 229.5. Brand names are marketing. “Synthetic” only belongs on the ticket if the factory required it, not because the bottle said full synthetic.

We filled blank cells from AMSOIL, Mobil, and Castrol only where those three agreed. A factory owner’s-manual number already in the sheet still wins, even if a finder fights it. Fights stay fights. We do not split the difference.

Do not use the other hole. Transmission fill, coolant, and DEF have all shown up in amateur “engine oil” tables. If a number looks like 1.6 qt on an SLK300, that is manual-trans oil, not the crankcase. The 1.8 is 8.5 US qt with filter.

How you actually pour it

  1. Warm the engine. Drain the pan. Spin off the filter and let it empty.
  2. New filter, o-ring oiled with clean oil, hand tight plus the book’s turn. Not a three-foot cheater.
  3. Pour the published with-filter fill. Leave a few ounces in the bottle if you are on a dry-sump or a steep driveway.
  4. Start it, leak-check, shut it off, wait, then read the stick on level ground.
  5. Top to the hash the book tells you — not to the very top of the tube.

If two published sources disagree by more than about 0.3 qt, do not invent a midpoint. Check the book, then the stick after a proper drain-back. The stick is the running check. The published fill is the starting pour.
